Medical Assistant (Certified or Registered)

A Certified Medical Assistant or Registered Medical Assistant who plays a key role assisting in the clinical care of patients according to the scope of duties described in RCW 18.360.050.

 

EXPECTATIONS:

The Medical Assistant will acknowledge in writing their agreement to comply with the organization’s Behavioral Commitments document as well as all other applicable policies.  

 
JOB SUMMARY: The Medical Assistant is a Certified Medical Assistant or Registered Medical Assistant who plays a key role assisting in the clinical care of patients according to the scope of duties described in RCW 18.360.050.

The Medical Assistant helps to ensure that care is conducted in accordance with established standards of care and organizational policies and procedures.  The Medical Assistant works with the Medical Director and Clinic Director to review clinical policies and procedures, to follow compliance policies and procedures and to participate in quality improvement programs.

COMPETENCIES AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Licensure:

  • High school graduate or equivalent

  • Current Washington State Medical Assistant Certification (Either Medical Assistant Certified or Medical Assistant Registered)

  • CPR certification (may be accomplished after hire)

  • Proficient with medical terminology

 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:  (other duties may be assigned)

Please note: “Physician” is used below to represent licensed independent practitioners, such as MD, DO, and ARNP (Nurse Practitioner) or Physician Assistants.

  1. Works collaboratively with Medical Director and Clinic Director to promote care of patients according to the organizational mission and values.

  2. Follows clinic policies and procedures and practices standard precautions.

  3. Greets and prepares patients for their visit, including for exams, and observes and reports patient’s signs or symptoms.

  4. Performs and records patient intake and gathering of information including medical history.

  5. Gathers and records patient information including for triage purposes, in person, phone or via Telehealth, and reports to Physician.

  6. Performs patient screening as directed by Physician.

  7. Obtains and records vital signs.

  8. Clerical duties include assembly of the documents and resources needed for patient charts and applicable patient education materials.

  9. Assists the Physician in exams, procedures, and diagnostic testing as needed.

  10. Follows up on test results and reports to patients as directed by Physician.

  11. Obtains blood samples through phlebotomy.  Training will be arranged by 3W as required if needed.

  12. Obtains specimens for microbiological testing as directed, including providing patient instruction.

  13. Performs office laboratory testing according to practice protocols and within the scope of duties.  Maintains necessary training and certification as applicable.

  14. Administers intramuscular medication and may administer vaccines.

  15. Collaborate with Receptionist with scheduling patient appointments as needed.

  16. Cleans, organizes and stocks the clinical areas including exam rooms and utility rooms.

  17. Adheres to procedures for equipment and instruments, including autoclaving, disposal of biohazardous materials and preparation for clean procedures.

  18. Assists in compliance with federal and state regulations pertaining to clinical aspects of providing health care. Develops reports as required.

  19. Assists Medical Director to ensure compliance with accepted standards of care and professional guidelines such as those published by ACOG, AWHONN, AAAHC, CDC and other appropriate organizations.

  20. Attends appropriate continuing education and educates self on aspects of women’s health care appropriate to the services provided by the clinic.

  21. Accesses and recommends patient education materials or assists in their development as needed.

  22. Manages the patient flow within the clinic.

  23. Assists the Physician to implement the plan of care.

  24. Communicates with patients as directed by the Physician.

  25. Notifies Physician of critical issues and results in a timely manner.

  26. Provides safe patient care.

  27. Completes medical record documentation consistent with medical assistant function and role.

  28. Assists Physicians and Sonographers as requested.

  29. Accountable for following the guidelines for attendance, punctuality and overall dependability.

  30. Accountable for effective performance and follow-through of all assigned responsibilities and for completing responsibilities within designated (or agreed upon) timeframes. Completes responsibilities in a manner consistent with organizational policy, goals and values.

  31. Performs other duties as assigned by Medical Director and Executive Director.

  32. Attend and participate in Governing Board and Advisory Board meetings as specifically requested.

  33. Work collaboratively with the Administrative department and attend promotional events when needed.

  34. Must give WAMS and 3W Medical for Women permission to video and take pictures of employee for all promotional materials and where it is appropriate for use of employee images.
